The Berkeley Storage Bed

The Story Behind the Berkeley Storage Bed

Nearby clients purchased a top-of-the-line Tempur-Pedic mattress but were unhappy with the base that came with it. Seeking a beautiful and functional solution, they asked for a base with ample storage.

I designed and built a platform bed featuring built-in drawers and a new headboard to give them exactly what they needed.

Project Design Process

Many years ago, I had built a platform bed with my father based on a design he had come up with. Starting with that and making modifications where necessary, I drew up a design that would work with the client’s existing mattress and tilt-adjusting mechanism, which needed to be included.

The client wanted the top of the mattress to hit a specific height, so the vertical measurements of all the components had to add up to that number. Also, the bed needed to be able to be disassembled to fit up a narrow staircase and then reassembled in the bedroom.

For strength and attractiveness, I decided to add dovetail joints for the six drawers. I lined the bottoms with cedar wood and used under-mount drawer slides to give the drawers a floating look.

I was given free rein on a headboard design. I felt a relatively simple design would compliment the clean look of the bed. My clients were very happy with the end result, and I gave them written instructions on how to disassemble/reassemble the bed in the future.
